New York Lawyer Guilty of Tax Fraud

March 10th, 2010 · No Comments

Joel Stashenko of the New York Law Journal reports that a prominent New York gay rights lawyer pleaded guilty Monday to a felony tax fraud charge that will result in her disbarment:

Bonnie Strunk, 62, of DeWitt, N.Y., admitted to fourth-degree criminal tax fraud before Supreme Court Justice John Brunetti in Syracuse. Strunk acknowledged in court that she failed to file a personal income tax return for 2008. Prosecutors contended she owed about $11,700 in taxes.

Strunk will face a three-year conditional discharge when sentenced on May 3, according to the agreement accepted by the judge. No jail time was attached to the plea settlement.

[P]rosecutors agreed not to pursue identity theft and grand larceny charges they brought last year against Strunk for allegedly opening a MasterCard account in the name of the husband of her former law partner and charging on it veterinary bills, airline tickets and other expenses, if she paid about $17,000 in restitution.

Strunk and her ex-partner, Faith Seidenberg, were long active in legal causes on behalf of women in the Syracuse area. Seidenberg’s husband, Robert, was the first male president of the Syracuse-area chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Ms. Strunk was apparently a big proponent of progressive taxation which is further proof (not that we needed it) that some folks love taxes as long as they don’t have to pay them.
