Tax on George Hamilton?

December 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments

george_hamilton_imageKim Gieger of Tribune Newspapers says that the Senate has inserted a last minute provision in the healthcare bill that would replace the botax with a 10% sales tax on the use of tanning beds:

Representatives from the tanning industry see the new tax as an attempt by cosmetic surgeons to replace a proposed excise tax on elective cosmetic surgery.

“It is not surprising that one primarily cosmetic business is trying to throw another under the bus by transferring a tax from rich doctors and their wealth customers to struggling small businesses,” said the Indoor Tanning Association’s John Overstreet.

The tax is projected to raise $2.7 billion over the next 10 years which, Ms. Gieger notes, is less than half the amount of revenues that would have been raised by the botax.

Cosmetic surgeons have argued that the botax would have discriminated against middle-class women, yet appear to be undisturbed that the tanning tax will be borne entirely by caucasians.

No word yet from George.

As an indoor tanning studio owner for the past 22 years and a pioneer in this industry I am appalled at the arrogance of those who want to tax a narrow band of the solar spectrum. Why not X-rays, and gamma rays there has to be money in those wave lenghts too.

Is the agenda to tax mom and pop out of business and force them to go to work for the man? I never used to think in that vein, but how can one survive if all of your profits are diverted to taxes?

Say goodbye to very small business in our once great country if legislators eliminate the middle class in their quest to socialize us for our own good!
