Will Federal Healthcare be as Inefficient as IRS?

September 14th, 2009 · No Comments

Jim Shelby of KnoxvilleBiz.Com writes that he expects the bureaucracy necessary to run federally provided healthcare to operate about as efficiently and competently as the Internal Revenue Service:

I find it hard to accept that so many intelligent people are adamant in their support for a federally owned health insurance company. It seems they completely put out of their minds how the government can mess up any type of organization serving the public that it runs.

My guess is that a public health insurance company would develop many of the same traits [as the IRS] very quickly since it would be controlled by politicians. There is a difference; inefficiencies by the IRS deal with something close to your heart, your money. Inefficiencies by a public health insurance company would be dealing with your real heart.

I have written before about why I think it’s absurd for taxpayers to want to fork over more of their money to an entity that has been so reckless and incompetent with it in the past. As long as taxpayers are willing to give government a raise for its poor performance, government will not be sufficiently motivated to improve that performance.

Clean up the waste and inefficiencies we now have then come to us asking for more dough.
