Fear the Reaper: Tampa Contractor Convicted of Hiring Hitman to Kill IRS Agent

December 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Soldier: He was from my village. He was the village idiot.
Boris: Yeah, what did you do, place?

- Woody Allen’s Love and Death

In a previous post titled Florida Contractor Hires Hitman to Have IRS Auditor Murdered, we wrote,

[Randy] Nowak, a wealthy Florida construction company owner, hired a hitman (really an undercover FBI agent) to murder his IRS auditor because the auditor had found that he underpaid his taxes by $300,000.00.

According to an article on MSNBC.Com, in closing arguments, federal prosecutors described Nowak as a man hell-bent on having his IRS auditor killed:

Nowak’s attorney, Melissa Wilson, argued that a friend of Nowak’s named Walt McGhee, convinced him to hire a hit man friend of his called The Reaper, who was actually an undercover federal agent:

“Reaper – the bringer of death,” Wilson told jurors. “The guy talked about dismembering somebody like it was nothing.”

Wilson unsuccessfully tried to convince the jury that Nowak never really intended to go through with the murder plan and only paid the Reaper out of fear that he might harm his family.

As Joe Kristan pointed out in an earlier post, it’s probably not a good idea to try to kill your IRS auditor. If you do, it’s a good bet they’ll just assign another auditor to pick up where the dead one left off.

Apologies to Woody Allen, but if this guy Nowak isn’t the Village Idiot from his village, he must have placed.
