Brotherly Love in Philadelphia: Non-Filer Gets 2 and 1/2 Year Sentence

September 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The brother of former Philadelphia mayor, John Street, was sentenced today to 2 and 1/2 years in prison for failing to file his federal income tax returns from 2001 through 2004.

Prosecutors proved that T. Milton Street earned over 3 million dollars during the period of his non-filing and that he willfully failed to file his tax returns to avoid paying the tax on that income.

Street told U.S. District Judge Legrome Davis that he didn’t believe he had a tax liability because he was not good at keeping his books and that he had given money to the poor.

The money was like ice. It was melting as fast as I was getting it.

Street used to be a hot dog vendor and later became a well-known activist. He served in the state House in 1979-80 and the state Senate from 1981 to 1984.

We have represented hundreds of non-filers, none of whom has ever been charged with tax evasion.

I guess non-filing looks a lot more willful when the returns you non-filed would have had 3 million dollars of revenue on them!

Here’s the Orlando Sentinel article I got this from: Brother of Philadelphia’s former mayor gets 2 and 1/2 years in prison for not filing tax returns.
